Scottish Wool Tweed

Like or not, the clothes we wear say a lot about us. They convey whether or not we are the type of person to agonize over which outfit to wear every day paying attention to every detail of our attire, just throw something on, or are only looking to be comfortable. The outfit we decide on is truly an extension of ourselves.

However, we don’t all go out and choose clothing that will make a statement about us. Of course we will most likely consider style, but there are other factors that determine what we wear, such as weather. What temperature it is outside really is a top consideration of what we'll wear.

With warm weather with have options like cotton, linen, silk and other lightweight, free moving materials. Cold weather brings the need for heavier fabrics and more layers. Wool is considered one of the top textiles in colder weather.

Wool is a very versatile material. There are all different types of wool, from the coarse, scratchy Scottish wool you find in tweed outerwear, right down to the soft and luxurious cashmere woolen sweaters you find in the most exclusive clothing shops. You are bound to find something that suits your needs and personality.

Scottish wool clothing is called tweed. This is a raw, coarse material that is itchy to the skin and is therefore only suitable for coats and other outerwear. It is made of unfinished wool but it is soft and flexible rather than stiff.

Tweed resembles homespun but is more tightly spun. It is often woven in a herringbone twill pattern. This is used in a wide range of different articles of clothing from blazers to hunting wear.

As a matter of fact, tweed Scottish wool is commonly worn in Scotland in certain outdoor activities like hunting and shooting. It is excellent for this type of use because it is very warm and is also water resistant, making it perfect for out of doors.

The traditional green tweed used in Scotland is referred to as lovat. This is the material worn on the outdoor activities previously mentioned.

Tweed was particularly popular in the past, but has declined in fashion use over the years. However, just recently it has started to be seen again in stores around the world and is coming back into style. As you have probably noticed, everything old is new once more.

Of course wearing Scottish wool is not only for those living in the United Kingdom! After all, it's not just the Scottish that enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. You might find that tweed is making a big comeback. Its distinctive appearance and warmth containing properties make it perfect for fall and winter wear.

If you are looking for a jacket or coat and want to go for something natural, take a look at tweed. It is renewable, and comfortable. It will keep you warm without overheating you and it comes in a fashionable pattern that is a great look for anything from a casual day out with friends, to the office during the week.
