Wool Socks: Keeping Your Tootsies Warm
To some extent, what you put on your feet is the driving force of how you feel all day long. Just think about an uncomfortable pair of shoes and how that makes you feel. All you can think about all day is how much your feet hurt. Whereas a pair of comfortable shoes may have you feeling like you're walking on clouds.
Shoes aren't the only thing that determines how comfortable your feet are. Our feet need to be able to breathe well in order to stay dry and keep them from feeling soggy and tired. Socks made of synthetic fibers are usually the ones that will give the worst performance, suffocating your feet and causing odor. Cotton is breathable but feels wet when you sweat and can also begin to smell bad at the end of the day.
Some people may be surprised to discover that Wool socks are one of the best options for what to wear on your feet. Although we generally associate wool with warm winter wear, it is actually a very breathable material that will keep in warmth when it's cold, but will also allow plenty of breathing and won't overheat your feet in warmer weather.
A downside to Wool is that it is also known for being scratchy. Who wants to have material scratching on their feet all day? Well, there is no need for that since merino wool socks are made of the wool of merino sheep which have the softest of all sheep wool. It feels soft and cozy against the skin and has all the properties of wool to boot.
There are a few attributes wool has that make it especially well suited for socks. Aside from temperature regulation, it also absorbs moisture and takes it away from the skin where it can evaporate. This is wonderful for socks that may stay wet all day if made of the wrong material and worn on sweaty feet.
Another great characteristic of wool is that it has antibacterial properties that keep it from creating odors. The reason people have smelly feet is not because of the sweat, but from the bacteria that feed on the sweat. With wool socks you will have far less bacteria to cause your feet to smell bad.
Alpaca socks are also a great natural type of sock. They are made from the fibers of the coat of the alpaca, which is a llama-like animal that lives in South America. These fibers are hair like and are very soft and are hypoallergenic as well.
Wool socks are not only good for the dead of winter, but they are breathable in the summer and comfortable on your feet year round. They are exceptional for those times you will be exercising and have a greater tendency to sweat. Overall, wool socks are great for every occasion, casual and dress wear and even athletic socks!
